ShareSource2 ... a mini rant

Site News
News item published 1 year ago
ShareSource is a collaborative software development management system. It was built in 2006 to provide a range of software development lifecycle services and to integrate with a number of free software / open source software applications (such as Subversion, Mercurial and Mailman).

ShareSource provides project hosting, version control (Subversion and Mercurial), bug-tracking, and messaging, with a wide range of new exciting offerings on the drawing board.

ShareSource2 is the next exciting version of ShareSource. With a completely rewritten core, it will be better equipted to handle high loads, and will lay the foundation for the next lot of ShareSource projects.

"ShareSource1", as it is now being tabbed on locations such as ShareSource's own IRC channel (irc://irc.sharesource.org/#sharesource) is great software, but as the projects come in ShareSource, particular parts of ShareSource get very slow. This is not noticeable for most people, because the worst parts are things like the ShareSource cron.

ShareSource1

ShareSource1, or the site that is currently running www.sharesource.org is a very nice piece of software, but, it does have its short comings. It consists of parts written in five languages (PHP, C, Ruby, Python and Bash)! It contained quite a number of "ordinary" features, such as:
  • Subversion Hosting
  • File Release Management
  • Project Administration
  • Simple Software Map
  • Simple Search
  • Project Tags
But there has been many things that ShareSource1 has evolved into doing within its lifetime. Such things include:
  • Speaking Mercurial
  • Subversion Snapshots
  • Cache to speed up slow parts of the ShareSource website
  • File Vault

ShareSource2

ShareSource1 is great, and at the time of writing, ShareSource.org still runs it. But, unfortunately, there is a number of things that are just not to crash hot about "ShareSource version One". I still like the site very much, and this is why the next version of ShareSource is being created. ShareSource2 is evolving some pretty slick things too:
  • Nice developer profiles
  • Project News
  • AJAX in many places
  • A whole new bugtracker
And wait for it ... this bugtracker gives out bugs with the right numbers
  • Download counter for the file release system
  • File release system has mirrors \o/
  • Project TODO Lists
  • Mailman
  • Project Patch Trackers (!!!)
  • Public API
  • Whole new look
  • ... many more features to be added.
ShareSource2 will be coming live soon, and I cannot wait to see it reach it's new stage, where ShareSource will hopefully be put down in history as the worlds best hosting website for open source projects.

Personal Stuff

I would really like to thank everyone who has helped make ShareSource what it is today. webs, (irc.sharesource.org), thank you for everything. You have no idea how much you have inspired me to work on ShareSource and make it into what it is today. OpenHosting, I do not know where ShareSource would be right now without you.

xrogaan, dag, camayal, itkach , guna, sepidar, dukebody and everyone else, thank you for submitting bug reports or asking for your features, your questions and requests have not fallen upon deaf ears.

Everyone at irc://irc.tty2.org/#chat - thanks for letting me annoy you all the time with constant "How does this look" being said. I think #chat should merge with #ShareSource almost.

To everyone who has a project on ShareSource, thank you, and I hope that you enjoy the service that you receive. I hope that you always remember that if you want a feature, all you have to do is ask.

It's Comming

The countdown will begin soon, but in the next few days, I will be submitting a new domain under ShareSource.org that will outline what will be cool about version 2.
